Today's “hypocritical tolerance”

Actualizado: 18 ago 2020

It continues to amaze me how today a lot of activist groups are spreading a message of tolerance, love, and freedom of expression, but most of the time these are the same groups that physically and verbally attack people who have a difference of opinion. These same groups hardly ever accept the possibility that other people have different ideologies.

Tolerance is defined as- the respect someone has for another person’s opinions, beliefs, feelings, or ideas of others, even when they differ or are antagonistic to your own. Therefore, to respect them we have to be kind and good to others.

To practice tolerance, it is necessary to listen to those who think and feel differently from you, And someone who is “tolerant” will find it in themselves to appreciate a point of view that is different from their own. However, today there is a very deviant concept of what tolerance is and relativism is the supreme virtue.

Relativism supports the idea that every philosophy, idea, and system of faith has the same merit and is worthy of equal respect. Anyone who claims to have knowledge of the absolute truth is considered "closed-minded,” "unenlightened" or even "intolerant.”

To be a tolerant person in today's society calls for us to accept all sexual orientations and support all liberal ideas that go against our morals and values such as recognizing that abortion is a "human right.”

To be able to thoughtfully discuss religious topics, it seems we are forced to make mutually exclusive statements however the relativist is unable to logically recognize and accept direct contradictions.

To further put this in context, the relativistic concept of "tolerance" used today contradicts itself.

Tolerance is considered a matter of morality, and interesting enough, this is very important for us to be able to live in society, taking into account that morality nowadays is also relative.

Nevertheless, for us Christians, everything that comes from Christ is morally good! More than ever, today's society attacks us for being "closed-minded" and "intolerant." As followers of Christ, we can tolerate others by showing respect to their person even if we do not agree or share their beliefs, but we must always preach by giving, being an example “Light” and by telling the truth because Jesus Christ has called us to show love and God is Love.

The word of God is the only truth:

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." John 1:14

Love your neighbor

'“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? ' Matthew 5:43-47
